Waste Management
I will advocate for Toronto to invest in a long-term,
sustainable solution. We must embrace the benefits of new and evolving
technologies. Shipping our waste to other jurisdictions is not sustainable
over the long-term.
In a speech to Etobicoke Rotarians, I said the following:
“I will strive to implement a long-term sustainable solution
to our waste management problem. Although I favour increasing our
waste reduction and diversion programs, we need to embrace new technologies.
The latest ‘Waste-to-Energy’ technologies (or thermo
processing) offer a clean and permanent solution. Some of the most
environmentally progressive countries in the world, like Sweden,
Denmark and Germany, have used this technology for many years. Once
again the inaction of our current City Council has resulted in only
band-aid solutions.”
In some European countries landfill sites are now being cleaned
up because of their potential environmental hazard. Michigan will
soon close its border to Toronto waste. City Council’s decision
to send 130 trucks per day, hauling 4,000 tonnes of waste to the
United States is a financial drain and is contrary to Canada’s
goal to reduce harmful emissions into our environment.
